Celebrating Your Emotional Independence

© 2010 by M. Dezelic & G. Ghanoum

On the 4th of July we celebrated our independence from Great Britain. This political breakthrough took courage, determination, perseverance and resilience to achieve its goal towards freedom. Many of us, our parents and friends, have fled countries in search of new opportunities, freedom of speech, freedom to choose, and freedom to succeed. We welcome the ability to have a political affiliation, but where are you affiliated when it comes to your Emotional Well-being? You can be free in terms of government and the society in which you live, but are you free from your personal Emotional Bondage?

When we focus on the exterior only, without doing our proper internal work, we might appear in a certain desired way; however, we will continue to suffer from what is holding us.  When we have peace inside of us, we are able join forces with others and Complete each other; versus when we are angry or bitter, we separate ourselves, and only Compete against each other!  When we are in our own Emotional Jail, we are bound by the chains, and only look to go against others because of our misery. But when we have Emotional Independence, where we are free from hatred and negativity, we are liberated to help others and become partners towards helping each other!

How can we achieve our Emotional Independence? This Internal Freedom is accomplished by working on the self through the understanding of emotions; by acknowledging the existence of your emotions rather than repressing or suppressing them; by asking the meaning of each emotion to be able to detect Emotional Blockages such as fear, shame, doubt, worry, anger, unforgiveness and sadness that prevent your joy and affect your physical and emotional well-being. Your emotions have a certain power. They can either control you like a dictator, or they can be set free to be felt, expressed, and passed through. You have the option to chose whether to be held hostage by your emotions or have an Emotional Stability and Strength to move beyond the moment of pain, fear, embarrassment, self-pity and even excitement and joy. When you hold emotions, they have a hold over you. When you let go of emotions, you are able to express them and move freely on your journey!

The first key to holding your Emotional Independence Flag is knowing who you are, what you need and what you desire. Move towards what you want rather than staying stuck and complaining about what you don’t want; do not make someone else responsible for your happiness. Remember, YOU are the creator of your own happiness! Take charge of nurturing yourself and emanating positive-loving energy. Work on moving from self-pity, self-doubting or self-loathing to self-compassion!

You can celebrate your own Emotional Independence everyday of your life as you learn to overcome your fear of disapproval and judgment by developing a healthy attitude of: "I don’t need everybody’s approval to be worthwhile." Emotional Independence allows you to be in control rather than to be controlled by the unhealed emotions of your past, and will support you in being nourished and filled with faith rather than diminished and weakened by fear. Start working with your shadow, clear any internal clutter, release toxins that have held you back and reprogram to your original blueprint of peace. Claim your Independence today and everyday as we celebrate our country’s Independence Day!
