Existential Therapy/Therapeutic Process Definition: (M. Dezelic, PhD)
A growth process encounter between a guide (with particular expertise) and a seeker (patient, client, individual, consumer, family, or group), where the guide offers existential psychoeducation—concepts of the human condition and “existence,” and an understanding of overwhelming experiences that have caused symptoms and maladaptive coping and living; through the encounter and presence of the two or group, it is an open invitation to explore and discover one’s ontological being (mind, body, and unique essence-spirit) of:
(1) The inner world—how the individual can learn to “be” in oneself, be connected to one’s own existence, and understand one’s sense of self in the world;
as well as in relation to
(2) The outer world—other human beings, animals, nature, creations, and process.
The existential therapeutic encounter is an unfolding, creative, and dynamic process, that focuses on the individual’s personal freedom and responsibility to one’s existence, meaning constructs (through a Biological, Personal, Relational-Social, and Cultural framework), and experiences, creativity, and attitudes throughout the human condition and “being” human, while exploring and creating a balance between meaninglessness and meaningful living.
